Tuber yield and irrigation water productivity in early potatoes as affected by irrigation regime

A two-year Sicilian early-potato experiment compared four irrigation windows. Supplying 100% of calculated maximum evapotranspiration from tuber initiation to about 50% of tuber growth produced yields statistically comparable with irrigation through the whole tuber-growth period, while using roughly half as much irrigation water. In the first year the two regimes produced about 54.9 and 56.6 t/ha; in the second year about 36.5 and 34.3 t/ha, respectively. The authors report an average irrigation saving of roughly 77 mm/year. Irrigation delayed until the second half of tuber growth did not recover the lost yield, showing that early tuber initiation/bulking is the higher-priority water window under the study conditions.

Transfer to Slovenian production

Moderate transferability: the biological or engineering mechanism and the decision logic are useful for Slovenian production, but the exact dose, threshold, timing, machine setting, temperature or shelf-life value must be calibrated locally.

A practical Kumer trial would instrument the active root zone, record the date of tuber initiation, and prioritise irrigation through early bulking. Compare total irrigation millimetres, marketable yield, tuber-size distribution, defects and water productivity with the current schedule; the Sicilian 77 mm saving is a benchmark to investigate, not a Slovenian target.

Local validation before adoption

  • Define the commercial endpoint before the trial: marketable yield, grade, freshness, shelf life, water/energy use or labour requirement.
  • Compare a control and a test treatment on the same cultivar, field or product lot wherever practical.
  • Log the variables that can change the outcome: weather, soil water, product temperature, relative humidity, working depth, crop stage and packaging as relevant.
  • Measure benefit and cost/risk together: yield, rejects, crop damage, labour, energy, water and quality.
  • Repeat the comparison in at least two relevant production windows or conditions before standardising the practice.

Expert interpretation

The operational lesson is stage prioritisation. In this experiment, water supplied during early tuber initiation and the first half of tuber growth protected yield far better than the same strategic idea applied only later. For Slovenia, the growth-stage logic is more transferable than the Sicilian dates or millimetres, because rainfall, soil water storage, cultivar maturity and planting date shift the actual irrigation requirement.

Why this matters to buyers and partners

For potato buyers, the relevant outcome is not water use alone but marketable yield, tuber size and defect rate. Stage-focused irrigation can be a route to better water productivity, but this study does not establish the water footprint or quality of Kumer potatoes without Kumer field data.
