Yield and nutritional quality of soil-cultivated crisphead lettuce and corn salad harvested at different growing periods

Research from the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia compared soil-grown corn salad across greenhouse and open-field periods. Growing period materially affected yield, chlorophyll, phenolics, sugars and mineral composition, showing that season and environment are part of product quality. What the full paper actually found

At Jablje, Slovenia, four crisphead-lettuce and five corn-salad varieties were grown in replicated soil trials in 2017. Corn salad was compared in spring greenhouse, spring open field and autumn open field: mean marketable yields were about 3.19, 5.15 and 4.10 t/ha, respectively, with growing period significantly affecting yield. Growing period also affected corn-salad chlorophyll, total phenolics, sugars, isovaleric acid and multielement composition; mean total phenolics were about 33.6, 29.8 and 25.4 mg GAE/g dry weight across those three periods. Variety influenced color/chlorophyll strongly, while nutritional composition showed important seasonal effects. Because the trial was conducted in Slovenian soil and climate, it is unusually relevant context for Kumer, but its varieties, fertilisation and experimental management still differ from a commercial Kumer field.

Transfer to Slovenian production

High contextual relevance: the crop and/or experimental environment is close to Slovenian production. Even so, published doses, thresholds and timings are not a recipe; cultivar, soil, weather, production window and market specification still require local validation.

For Kumer 1687, the defensible use of this evidence is as a hypothesis and measurement framework to test against its own fields, lots and cold-chain records. A published result becomes a production rule only after local validation.

Local validation before adoption

  • Define the commercial endpoint before the trial: marketable yield, grade, freshness, shelf life, water/energy use or labour requirement.
  • Compare a control and a test treatment on the same cultivar, field or product lot wherever practical.
  • Log the variables that can change the outcome: weather, soil water, product temperature, relative humidity, working depth, crop stage and packaging as relevant.
  • Measure benefit and cost/risk together: yield, rejects, crop damage, labour, energy, water and quality.
  • Repeat the comparison in at least two relevant production windows or conditions before standardising the practice.

Interpretation boundary

The page explains what the independent paper supports and where the evidence may be useful. It does not state that Kumer 1687 uses the same treatment or achieves the same numerical result unless that is documented separately on a Kumer-specific page.

Expert interpretation

This Slovenian field-and-greenhouse study shows that nutritional quality is not a fixed property of the crop name. Variety and growing period changed yield, chlorophyll/color, phenolics, sugars, aroma-related isovaleric acid and mineral composition. For agronomy, the useful target is therefore a marketable-yield × nutritional-quality combination rather than yield alone.

Why this matters to buyers and partners

For buyers, the study supports specifying variety, growing period and analytical quality where nutritional composition matters; visual color can help describe the product but cannot substitute for laboratory composition data.

Limits and transferability

This paper does not prove that Kumer 1687 uses the same treatment, equipment, storage regime or achieves the same numerical result. Local soil, cultivar, weather, maturity, package design and cold-chain conditions can materially change the outcome.
